Despite a 1-0 loss at Sporting Park to Philadelphia on Friday, Sporting Kansas City exited the weekend in second place in the Eastern Conference and could clinch a spot in the 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs this upcoming weekend.
Through 30 matches, Sporting KC has 48 points, seven ahead of sixth place Columbus and seventh place New England. Below is this week's Playoff Math that takes a look at the latest Eastern Conference standings as well as the race for the Supporters' Shield.
Magic Number
6 - The number of points Sporting KC needs to clinch a playoff spot is down one point from last week. Two more victories would move them to 54 points and out of reach of Columbus, New England and Chicago. All of those teams are currently on the outside looking in and can finish with no more than 53 points (52 for Chicago, 50 for Columbus).
This weekend, Sporting KC could clinch a playoff spot if ...
- Sporting KC defeats Columbus Crew AND
-
Two of the Three happen
- New England Revolution loses at New York Red Bulls
- Chicago Fire loses at D.C. United
- Philadelphia Union loses to Toronto FC
