Playoff Math: Sporting KC moving closer towards clinching spot

Fresh off a convincing 4-0 victory at Chivas USA, Sporting KC are inching closer towards clinching a playoff spot for the fourth consecutive season.

Heading into their last five regular season matches, Sporting KC are second place in the Eastern Conference, two points behind first place D.C. United and eight points ahead of sixth place Philadelphia Union. The club is off in MLS play this week but all other Eastern Conference sides will be in action.

Looking at recent years, the fifth place team in the Eastern Conference has earned 49 points (Montreal in 2013) and 53 points (Houston in 2012).

Magic Number

11 - The maximum number of points Columbus, Philadelphia, and Toronto can earn is 55. If Sporting KC reach 56 points (11 more than their current total), they'll be guaranteed at least a Top 5 finish in the Eastern Conference standings. This number will change from week to week as all three clubs will likely drop some points in their remaining matches.
