CONCACAF today revealed preliminary details about the CONCACAF League of Nations tournament, which will begin with qualifying play in September.
The U.S. National Team and the five other nations that competed in the hexagonal round of 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying will not have to play any qualifying matches, instead receiving automatic berths to the tournament as the top six sides in the new CONCACAF Ranking Index.
The other 34 CONCACAF nations eligible for the competition will play four qualifying matches during international windows between September 2018 and March 2019. Results of these qualifiers will shape the Ranking Index, which in turn will be used to seed the inaugural League of Nations tournament.
To schedule matches, the 34 teams have been seeded into Pots A through D based on the preliminary Rankings index, and will play against teams from every pot in one of their qualifiers. The full format of the CONCACAF Nations League will be revealed at the launch event this Wednesday in Miami, which precedes the Nations League Qualifying draw.
