Recap: Sporting KC comes back for 1-1 draw with Dallas

Sporting Kansas City (6-22-5, 23 pts.) came back from an early deficit and saved a late penalty to earn a 1-1 draw with FC Dallas (15-8-10, 55 pts.) at Sporting Park on Saturday afternoon. Jansen Miller scored his first career goal late in the first half before Stefan Cleveland salvaged a point for Sporting in second-half stoppage time with a penalty stop on Petar Musa.

Head coach Raphael Wicky made two changes to the team following Wednesday’s defeat in Minnesota, as Owen Wolff replaced the injured Kwaku Agyabeng (ankle) in midfield for his first start for the club, while Ruben Ramos Jr. checked in for Stephen Afrifa up front.

Sporting created the first opening of the match in the 16th minute when Emir Karic picked out Capita Capemba just inside the penalty area but the Angolan’s strike on the turn sailed narrowly over the bar.

Dallas took the lead in the 19th minute on the counterattack with Herman Johansson finishing from close range after being set up unselfishly by Ran Binyamin.

Sporting generated the team’s best opening in the 34th minute when Taylor Calheira snuck in behind the Dallas backline but saw his effort blocked before Andre Luiz’s follow-up was saved by Jonathan Sirois.

Sporting found the equalizer on the stroke of halftime through Miller’s first professional goal. The centerback rose highest at the far post to meet Wolff’s enticing free kick delivery and sent a bullet header into the back of the net to make the halftime score 1-1.

Following a cagey start to the second half, Sporting almost found the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute when some neat interplay in midfield allowed Calheira to slip Andre in on goal but his prodded effort was well saved by the onrushing Sirois.

With the game heading for a stalemate, Dallas won a penalty kick deep into second half stoppage time when Miller was called for a handball in the penalty area following Video Review. Dallas star Musa stepped up to take and Sporting goalkeeper Cleveland produced a brilliant diving save to his right, recording the first penalty save of his MLS career to salvage a point for Sporting in the club’s home finale.

Sporting closes out the 2026 MLS season next weekend with a trip to take on San Diego FC at Snapdragon Stadium during Decision Day on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CT and will be available to stream on Apple TV, while the game will be air on the radio on Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM.
