The Sporting Kansas City Academy U16’s suffered a 4-0 defeat to River Plate (Argentina) on Wednesday at the 2014-15 Generation adidas Cup in Frisco, Texas.
The result drops the U16's to third place in Group A and prevents the team from advancing to the semifinals of the 12-team Champions Division, where the three group stage winners and the best overall second place finisher will play for the championship.

The U16s will conclude the tournament with two placement matches at the Toyota Soccer Center, facing Real Salt Lake on Thursday at 3 p.m. CT before a final game Saturday at 2 p.m. CT against an opponent to be determined. The U16's opened the tournament on Saturday with a 4-2 win over Aspire Academy (Qatar) before losing 2-0 to Toronto FC on Monday.
The Generation adidas Cup has been held annually since 2007 and serves as Major League Soccer's Under-17 national championship. Thursday's semifinal matchups feature host FC Dallas versus Eintracht Frankfurt (Germany) and River Plate (Argentina) versus Palmeiras (Brazil), with the winners meeting in Saturday's final.
In addition, this year's competition will be held in conjunction with the league's inaugural under-12 tournament. Led by head coach Matt Trumpp, Sporting KC's U-12 Academy squad is one of eight MLS academies participating, along with youth sides from Mexico's Queretaro FC and Club America USA. Three days of 7-v-7, 30-minute matches will be played, culminating in a championship match featuring the winner of each six-team group.
