Sporting KC Academy product Zach Wright is preparing for a trip to College Cup after his North Carolina side claimed a 1-0 victory over Providence in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals at Fetzer Field on Friday, Dec. 2. The Tar Heels will face Stanford in the Semifinals on Friday, Dec. 9 at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas, with kickoff set for 7:45 p.m. CT on ESPNU.


Wright played 54 minutes against the Friars on Friday, leading the team with four shots and two shots on goal. Despite a dominant performance from North Carolina, the score was locked at 0-0 after 90 minutes as the two sides headed to overtime. In the 102nd minute, Drew Murphy scored the goal that ended the contest and sent the Tar Heels to their first College Cup since reaching four in a row from 2008-2011.


Wright will take on reigning National Champions Stanford in the Semifinals, with the Cardinal advancing after a 2-0 Quarterfinal victory over Louisville at Lynn Stadium in Kentucky. Foster Langsdorf and Sam Werner each tallied in the second half as Stanford continue to look for a second consecutive NCAA Tournament crown.


In the other Semifinal, Denver will face Wake Forest this Friday on ESPNU, with kickoff from BBVA Compass Stadium set for 5 p.m. CT.
