Sporting KC and The Victory Project host annual Special Olympics scrimmage at Children’s Mercy Park

ROWE4360

In partnership with Unified Sports and Special Olympics Kansas, The Victory Project and Sporting Kansas City hosted a 40-minute soccer scrimmage for area athletes from local Unified Schools on May 28th at Children’s Mercy Park.

Taking place shortly after Sporting’s 4-1 home win over the Portland Timbers, the Special Olympics scrimmage featured 21 local athletes who took the field for a comprehensive matchday experience inside the stadium. Sporting KC fans, associates and players cheered on the teams -- with Graham Zusi taking the field to join the action -- in addition to providing postgame autographs.

Both teams in the scrimmage were presented with authentic, personalized match jerseys from adidas during an event held on May 23rd at Compass Minerals National Performance Center in which each player signed a contract alongside Sporting KC Academy Director Declan Jogi. The team, as well as their family members, were invited to observe Sporting Kansas City training and athletes were able to meet their professional peers while also getting professional photos taken to commemorate the occasion.
