Sporting KC forward Daniel Salloi named to Hungary U-21 national team for Euro Championship qualifying

Sporting Kansas City forward Daniel Salloi has been named to the Hungary U-21 Menā€™s National Team ahead of two qualifying matches for the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

Salloi and the Hungary U-21s will host Sweden on Friday, Nov. 10 at Szusza Ferenc Stadion in Budapest before traveling to face Cyprus on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at AEK Arena in Larnaca.

Salloiā€™s selection to the U-21 squad continues a breakout year for the 21-year-old, who finished the 2017 campaign with six goals in 27 appearances for Sporting Kansas City across all competitions. Salloi scored three times in the MLS regular season and added three more goals in Sporting KCā€™s run to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title, including the game-winning strike in the final against the New York Red Bulls on Sept. 20.

A native of Budapest, Hungary, Salloi signed for Sporting Kansas City as a Homegrown Player in January 2016 after two standout seasons with the Sporting KC Academy. He spent the 2016 campaign on loan with the Swope Park Rangers ā€” where he tallied four goals and three assists ā€” as well as Hungarian club Gyirmot SE.

Hungary currently occupies fourth place in Group 6 of UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying, having played fewer matches than all other teams in the group. A home-and-away round robin will see each team play 10 group stage matches by the end of October 2018, with the first-place finisher advancing to the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. The second-place finisher will advance to a two-legged playoff in November 2018 if it is one of the four best second-place teams in the nine qualifying groups.

Salloi has previously represented Hungary at the U-18 level, notably helping the Magyars to a third-place finish at the Vaclav Jezek Tournament in Czech Republic in 2013. He has also competed for the Hungary U-19s and trained with the U-21s during his youth international career.

Salloi is the fourth generation of his family to play professional soccer. His father, Istvan Salloi, scored more than 130 goals during a 16-year professional career in Hungary and Israel. Istvan also appeared for the Hungary Menā€™s National Team 13 times between 1992-1995.
