Sporting KC forward Khiry Shelton undergoes successful ankle surgery

Khiry Shelton - Sporting KC vs. Houston - Sept. 30, 2023

Sporting Kansas City forward Khiry Shelton underwent successful surgery today to repair a high ankle sprain in his right ankle, the club has announced.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Kirk McCullough at the Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute. Shelton is expected to be sidelined for eight to 10 weeks.

In five seasons with Sporting, Shelton has tallied 15 goals and 17 assists in 138 competitive matches. He made 30 appearances last season and notably recorded an assist in a 4-1 road playoff win over rivals St. Louis City SC on Oct. 29, helping his team reach the Western Conference Semifinals for the fourth time in his Kansas City tenure.

Sporting will play two more preseason friendlies in Miami—facing Miami FC on Saturday and Atlanta United FC on Feb. 17—before opening the 2024 MLS regular season at Houston on Feb. 24. The club will then host the Philadelphia Union on March 2 in the first of 17 MLS home matches at Children’s Mercy Park.
