Four teams of local and national media members took part in Sporting Kansas City’s annual media game, played at halftime of Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Columbus Crew SC at Children’s Mercy Park. Adhering to the Retro Night theme, the four teams clashed in old-school MLS penalty shootouts rather than a full-field match.
At the South Stand goal, Team Leabo defeated Team Sinovic by a 3-1 scoreline. KCTV5’s Tom Martin gave Team Leabo the lead in the second round, before stoning FOX Sports 1 broadcaster Katie Witham on the next attempt.
Joshua Brisco from Sports Radio 810 WHB equalized for Team Sinovic in the third round, only for Team Leabo to regain the lead moments later when The Blue Testament’s Thad Bell converted. In the next round, Univision Kansas City’s Juan Cruz gave Team Leabo a two-goal cushion and that’s how it would remain.
On the other side of the field, Team Augustine took on Team Gutierrez in front of the Cauldron. KCTV5’s Rudy Harper rounded the goalkeeper and finished calmly to give Team Gutierrez the lead in the second round, and Julio Ayala from Hola Media Group doubled that lead in the third round.
Fellow Hola Media Group member Jose Ortiz made it three goals to none before Tate Steinlage from the Talkin’ Touches podcast added a fourth. Former Kansas City Wizard and current ESPN Deportes broadcaster, Diego Gutierrez, put the icing on the cake with a stunning chip in the final round to make the score 5-0.
