Sporting KC selects goalkeeper David Greczek in third round of MLS SuperDraft

David Greczek with Rutgers - 2017 MLS SuperDraft

Sporting Kansas City selected 22-year-old goalkeeper David Greczek with the 58th overall pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft on Tuesday.

Greczek played collegiate soccer at Rutgers University, ending his career with a school-record 372 saves in 75 appearances. The goalkeeper posted a 1.72 goals against average and 16 shutouts during a decorated four-year career with the Scarlet Knights.

A native of Fairfield, New Jersey, Greczek earned Second Team All-American Athletic Conference honors as a freshman in 2013. He led Rutgers’ transition to the Big Ten the following year, leading the conference with 4.71 saves per game.

Greczek notched eight shutouts as a junior in 2015, the most by a Rutgers goalkeeper since 1998. He finished the campaign as an All-Big Ten Second Team selection as the Scarlet Knights advanced to the second round of the 2015 NCAA Soccer Championship. He led the Big Ten with 101 saves during his senior year, becoming the active NCAA Division I leader in career saves.

Previously a member of the New York Red Bulls Academy, Greczek joined MLS club New York City FC for a two-week training spell in 2015. He also played for the USL Premier Development League team Jersey Express last summer, making 28 saves in seven matches.

Greczek and 2017 first-round draft pick Colton Storm will join Sporting Kansas City in Tucson, Arizona for the club’s 2017 preseason, presented by Children’s Mercy. The club will first report from Jan. 23 – Feb. 7, then return from Feb. 15-25 for the Desert Diamond Cup.
