Sporting Kansas City announced today that the club has signed Sporting KC II defender Alex Cunningham to a short-term agreement ahead of the club’s home match against LAFC on Saturday night at Sporting Park. The call up marks the first of four available short-term agreements of the 2026 season for Cunningham.
Cunningham, 19, came up through the Sporting KC Academy and signed with SKC II ahead of the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro season after attending the University of Tulsa from 2024-2025. The outside back has made nine appearances for SKC II this year after being sidelined through injury for most of the first half of the season.
The Springfield, Missouri native joined the SKC Academy in 2019 as a U-12 player and was part of the Sporting KC U-14 team that was crowned 2021 US Youth Futsal national champions. Cunningham debuted for SKC II at the age of 16 on Aug. 13, 2023, and made seven appearances before – scoring his first professional goal against MNUFC2 on June 2, 2024 – before departing for Tulsa in the fall of 2024.
As a Golden Hurricane, Cunningham started 28 games, scored three goals and tallied two assists. He earned a spot on the 2024 American Conference All-Freshman Team and was named American Conference Freshman of the Week on Oct. 14, 2024, after he scored his first collegiate goal in a 1-1 draw against Central Arkansas.
Kickoff for the match against LAFC at Sporting Park is set for 7:30 p.m. CT on Saturday night with the game broadcast on Apple TV, Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM. Tickets are available via SeatGeek.
