Sporting KC to host FC Tulsa on May 21 at Children’s Mercy Park in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16


Sporting Kansas City earned a thrilling 2-1 road win at Union Omaha on Wednesday in the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and has advanced to host FC Tulsa at 7:30 p.m. CT on Tuesday, May 21 at Children’s Mercy Park.

Tickets for the Round of 16 match-up are available to purchase online via SeatGeek and are included in Sporting Kansas City Season Ticket Member packages.

Led by first-year head coach Mario Sanchez – a former draft pick of the Kansas City Wizards in 1998 – FC Tulsa and Sporting Kansas City will meet for the first time in each club’s history. FC Tulsa competes in the USL Championship and has reached the Round of 16 for the first time after a 1-0 victory over Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Tuesday.

Sporting Kansas City rallied for a 2-1 comeback victory in Omaha on Wednesday as Marinos Tzionis equalized in the second half to force extra time and Designated Player Alan Pulido came off the bench to score the latest goal in club history with a 120th-minute game-winner.

Sporting Kansas City is one of six remaining Major League Soccer teams in a Round of 16 field that features 10 teams from leagues in the lower divisions of American soccer. All of the action from the Round of 16 will be free to watch on, including match replays available on demand.

The 2024 U.S. Open Cup will crown a champion on Sept. 25 after eight rounds of single-elimination play and the winner of the 109th edition of the competition will claim the Dewar Challenge Trophy along with prize money and a berth in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup. Major League Soccer teams will only play lower division opponents in the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup until it cannot be avoided.

The U.S. Open Cup, named in honor of former Kansas City Wizards owner Lamar Hunt, has crowned a champion since 1914 and Sporting KC (2004, 2012, 2015, 2017) are four-time winners of U.S. Soccer’s national championship, tied for the most among MLS clubs. Sporting have prevailed in 26 U.S. Open Cup matches since 2012, more than any other team in American soccer, during a run that includes an active 13-match home unbeaten streak in U.S. Open Cup play since the start of 2015.
