Sporting KC to visit Houston Dynamo in 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16

Sporting Kansas City will visit the Houston Dynamo on June 27 or 28 in the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16, U.S. Soccer announced on Thursday. The match will be streamed live on SportingKC.com, with exact date and kickoff time to be confirmed in the near future.

Wednesday’s dominant 4-0 home victory over Minnesota United FC propelled Sporting Kansas City into the Round of 16, where it will face a Houston Dynamo side that edged NASL outfit North Carolina FC by a 3-2 scoreline in the fourth round.

Sporting Kansas City and Houston will meet in the U.S. Open Cup for the third straight year and the fourth time overall. Manager Peter Vermes’ men earned a 3-1 quarterfinal victory over the Dynamo en route to the 2015 Open Cup championship before Houston exacted revenge with a 3-1 home win of their own in last season’s Round of 16.

The winner between Sporting Kansas City and Houston will progress to the quarterfinals and meet the victor from the FC Dallas-Colorado Rapids matchup. If Sporting KC advances past Houston, the quarterfinal clash would be played at Children’s Mercy Park between July 7-16.

The Round of 16 split all remaining teams into four regions, with the following matchups set to take place in less than two weeks’ time:

CENTRAL: Sporting Kansas City at Houston Dynamo; Colorado Rapids at FC Dallas
EAST: D.C. United at New England Revolution; Philadelphia Union at New York Red Bulls
SOUTH: Atlanta United FC at Miami FC; Chicago Fire at FC Cincinnati
WEST: Seattle Sounders FC at San Jose Earthquakes; Sacramento Republic FC at LA Galaxy

Now in its 104th edition, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has been held annually since 1914 and is open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The 2017 tournament began with a modern-era record 99 teams.

This year’s U.S. Open Cup champion will receive $250,000 in prize money and a berth in the 2019 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League. Sporting Kansas City has lifted the Dewar Challenge Trophy as champions of the competition in 2004, 2012 and 2015. A fourth title would tie Sporting KC with the Chicago Fire and Seattle Sounders FC for most Open Cup championships among MLS clubs.
