Sporting Legend Preki wins USL PRO championship with Sacramento Republic

Few players in American soccer history have a resume comparable to Preki. The Serbian-American scored more than 400 goals in his professional career, 79 of those coming for the Kansas City Wizards.

And now the U.S. international can add another line to his resume after his Sacramento Republic FC squad won the USL Pro championship Saturday night in Sacramento, California. Preki was also named the 2014 USL PRO Coach of the Year prior to leading Sacramento Republic to a 2-0 win over Harrisburg City Islanders in the club's inaugural season.

Preki retired from professional soccer in 2005 as one of the most prolific strikers in MLS history. The two-time MLS MVP is Kansas City's all-time regular season leader in goals (71), assists (98), shots (693) and shots on goal (283). Preki recorded double-digit assists in eight straight years (1996-2003) and was a member of the 2000 Wizards squad that won the MLS Cup / Supporters' Shield double as well as the 2004 squad that won the U.S. Open Cup.

Preki was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2010 and was also a member of the inaugural class of Sporting Legends in 2013 alongside goalkeeper Tony Meola and former Kansas City and USMNT head coach Bob Gansler.

Following his retirement from professional soccer, Preki coached Chivas USA for three seasons - leading the Los Angeles-based club to three consecutive playoff berths - and Toronto FC for one year. Toronto failed to qualify for the playoffs during Preki's one year in charge, but they did win the Canadian Championship to earn a berth in the 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League
