Major League Soccer announced today the MLS Team of the Matchday presented by Audi for Matchday 14 of the regular season with Sporting Kansas City forward Stephen Afrifa honored as one of the top 20 players in the league following the team's 2-1 come-from-behind victory at Austin FC on Saturday.
Afrifa entered the match in the 75th minute with SKC trailing 1-0 on the road and within eight minutes flipped the match in Sporting's favor with the game-winning goal on a superb strike for his first goal since 2024 and the team's first points at Q2 Stadium.
"I’m very, very happy for Stephen," Sporting KC head coach Raphael Wicky said in the postgame press conference. "That's what we want to see from him when he comes in. Obviously, you can't hit it better. I’m very happy for him and I think it just shows that when you keep working hard that you get rewarded."
"I’m just happy to help the team get the win," Afrifa said postgame. "It's a shot I like a lot, cutting inside and curling it back post. The shot came off exactly how I wanted it."
After back-to-back wins, Sporting Kansas City will play the club's final match before the World Cup this weekend as the team hosts Red Bull New York at 7:30 p.m. CT on Saturday on Star Wars Night at Sporting Park.
