The Tale of Two Cities

Sporting Kansas City faces the Chicago Fire this Saturday at Toyota Park (7:30 p.m. CT on KSMO-TV). The game marks the first of three meetings this season between the two Midwestern rivals and we expect a showdown in Chi-town.

While the rivalry received renewed attention last year with the introduction of the #PutOutTheFire campaign, the roots to the rivalry run much deeper than a clever, albeit self-imposed marketing ploy. As you all know by now, we are indeed schemers over here in the team offices, and we love a good compliment, but as much as we'd like to take the credit for creating a rivalry with the Chicago Fire OUT OF THE BLUE, we simply can't, too unethical.

Instead, let's take a stroll down memory lane together over the next few days leading up to the big grudge match. And I trust you'll agree, the relationship's bridges were burned long before any free Firehouse Subs were passed out.

So, I am new to this blogging stuff, but I've already noticed that more often than not, we save the best for last. Fortunately, I've always been more of a dessert first kind of gal. So here it is, the beginning of the journey that is Kansas City versus Chicago…circa 2000, MLS Cup edition:
