SPORTING KC OPENS MLS REGULAR SEASON AT SEATTLE
Sporting Kansas City visits CenturyLink Field to open the club's 2014 MLS campaign against the Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT. More than 400 Kansas City supporters are scheduled to make the trip to Seattle. The match will be broadcast live on NBCSN and can be heard locally in Spanish on La Gran D 1340AM.
In addition, Sporting KC will host the official watch party for the match at Johnny's Tavern in the Power & Light District. A Sporting KC player will be in attendance to join supporters for the opening match. Drink specials will include $5 Boulevard schooners and a Sporting Kansas City designed Red Bull drink.
SPORTING KC UNVEILS NEW SECONDARY JERSEY
Sporting Kansas City unveiled the club's 2014 secondary kit on Tuesday during Sporting Takeoff at the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport as part of Major League Soccer's annual Jersey Week. The jersey features a three-dimentional lenticular Sporting KC shield with a checkered pattern visible that pays tribute to the flags waved by supporters at Sporting Park. Imprinted inside the jersey on the reverse side of the crest is a "For the Glory of this City" badge inspired by the KC Cauldron's banner display at the 2012 U.S. Open Cup final. Two stars are vertically stacked above the shield to represen the team's two MLS Cup championships (2000, 2013), highlighted by the gold star exclusive to Sporting Kansas City as a distinction of Major League Soccer's reigning champion.
The adidas kits are the lightest soccer jersey available with mesh material along the top of the jersey back and upper sleeves and prominently showcase Ivy Funds, Sporting Kansas City's presenting jersey partner and official investment management partner, centrally located in silver on the front of the new uniform. SPORTING KANSAS CITY ANNOUNCES MATT BESLER AS TEAM CAPTAIN
Sporting Kansas City named U.S. Men's National Team defender and Kansas City native Matt Besler as the 2014 team captain on Tuesday. Besler has spent his entire MLS career with Kansas City after being drafted in the first round of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft (eighth overall). The two-time MLS Best XI selection and two-time MLS All-Star addressed the crowd at last night's Sporting Takeoff event.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY PLAYERS EARN INTERNATIONAL MINUTES
Sporting Kansas City forward Soony Saad scored the game-winning goal in Lebanon's AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Thailand earlier today. In Lebanon's 5-2 victory, Saad's goal in the 45th minute came just ten minutes after he was subbed into the match.
Lebanon was mathematically eliminated from finishing in the top two of their group heading into Wednesday's match, however Lebanon had a chance to secure a wild card spot pending the result of The People's Republic of China and Iraq. With Iraq's 3-1 victory, The People's Republic of China claimed the wild card spot and Lebanon was eliminated from the tournament.
Sporting Kansas City defender Mechack Jerome earned another international appearance for Haiti in a scoreless draw against Kosovo on Wednesday. Marc Kollat debuted as head coach for the Haitian side and elected to start Jerome for the Grenadiers.The friendly marked Kosovo's first FIFA sanctioned international match.
SPORTING KC SIGNS SUPERDRAFT SELECTION ALEX MARTINEZ
Sporting Kansas City signed 2014 MLS SuperDraft selection Alex Martinez. The 22-year-old midfielder will occupy one of the team's three available supplemental roster spots. Martinez was selected in the third round of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft out of North Carolina State Univeristy. After a strong showing at the MLS Player Combine, Martinez saw minutes in seven of Sporting Kansas City's 10 preseason matches and contributed three assists.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY AND JOHNNY'S TAVERN ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP
Sporting Kansas City announced a partnership with Johnny's Tavern on Tuesday making the Kansas City-area tavern the official watch party location of Sporting Kansas City. Both locally based companies, Johnny's Tavern and Sporting Kansas City make a natural fit for a partnership. Johnny's Tavern is the home base for the KC Cauldron, Sporting Kansas City's largest supporters group, and the Kansas City chapter of American Outlaws. Johnny's Tavern provides Sporting KC fans the opportunity to watch away matches in the company of other Sporting Kansas City fans at any of the nine Johnny's locations throughout the Kansas City and Lawrence, Kan. areas.
SPORTING PARK TO FEATURE NEW FOOD OPTIONS AND CHAMPIONS CLUB OPTIONS IN 2014
Sporting Kansas City and KC American Sportservice, the team's food and beverage partner, have officially unveiled the new menu lineup for the 2014 Major League Soccer season at Sporting Park.
New items will be featured in the concessions area, including the new Champion's Club offering, and will be available for ticket holders to complement the one-of-a-kind game day experience beginning with the team's first home match on Wednesday, March 12.
