Sporting Kansas City acquired center back Dany Rosero in a transfer from Colombian side Atletico Junior in March 2023. Rosero eclipsed 300 professional appearances across Argentina and his native Colombia, scoring 20 goals and competing in the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. Beginning his career at Argentine club Arsenal de Sarandi as a teenager, the defender spent seven seasons in the Colombian top-flight Categoria Primera A with Patriotas Boyacá, Deportivo Cali and Junior.
Born in Colombia, Rosero moved to Argentina to join Arsenal’s youth academy and began his professional career with the club in 2012. He enjoyed a pair of early breakthroughs by helping Arsenal win the 2013 Copa Argentina and by appearing in the 2014 Copa Libertadores. Rosero returned to his home country in 2016 with Patriotas Boyacá where strong performances paved the way for Rosero to join Colombian powerhouse Deportivo Cali in 2017. Rosero delivered his most dominant season to date in 2019, scoring seven goals and starting 55 games in all competitions, with Deportivo Cali finishing as Copa Colombia runners-up.
In 2020, Rosero signed for Colombian heavyweights Junior and played in both the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, making 11 starts across the two tournaments. The following season, Rosero made seven appearances in the Copa Libertadores and one in the Copa Sudamericana while scoring three goals in 33 Primera A matches as Junior finished fifth in the aggregate league table. Rosero remained one of the Colombian first division’s best center backs in 2022, starting 36 league games and propelling Junior to the Copa Colombia finals.
PROFESSIONAL
2023: Acquired by Sporting on March 2 in a transfer from Atletico Junior. Made 33 appearances across all competitions, tallying three goals, and was named the club's Newcomer of the Year. MLS Regular Season: Started all 26 appearances after making his debut in the 0-0 road draw at Philadelphia on April 1. Scored his first goal for the club in the 3-0 home win over Minnesota on May 13 before scoring again in the 2-1 road loss to Austin FC on July 15. MLS Cup Playoffs: Started all four matches in the postseason, and played almost every minute aside from the closing stages of Game 2 of Round One against St. Louis after breaking his nose and leaving the game in the 85th minute. Open Cup: Did not feature. Leagues Cup: Played every minute across Sporting's three matches, scoring a goal in the club's 3-3 draw on the road at FC Cincinnati on July 23.
Atletico Junior (2020-2023):
In 2020, Rosero signed for Colombian heavyweights Junior and played in both the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, making 11 starts across the two tournaments. He also scored two league goals and guided his team to the Primera A playoff semifinals in a Covid-shortened campaign. The following season, Rosero made seven appearances in the Copa Libertadores and one in the Copa Sudamericana while scoring three goals in 33 Primera A matches as Junior finished fifth in the aggregate league table.
Rosero remained one of the Colombian first division’s best center backs in 2022, starting 36 league games and propelling Junior to the Copa Colombia finals, where they lost 2-1 on aggregate to Millonarios. He played his final three matches for Junior earlier this month as the club kicked off its 2023 campaign.
Deportivo Cali (2017-2019):
Strong performances with Patriotas paved the way for Rosero to join Colombian powerhouse Deportivo Cali in 2017. His first season with the team was highlighted by 26 league starts and a run to the Primera A Apertura finals, where Deportivo Cali lost to Atletico Nacional. The following year, Rosero helped his side reach the 2018 Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals while adding two goals in 30 league matches (29 starts).
Rosero delivered his most dominant season to date in 2019, scoring seven goals and starting 55 games in all competitions, with Deportivo Cali finishing as Copa Colombia runners-up, placing fourth in the Primera A aggregate table and again competing in the Copa Sudamericana.
Patriotas Boyaca (2016):
Rosero returned to his home country in 2016 and made an immediate impact in the Colombian first division, scoring four goals and starting 35 of 37 league appearances with Patriotas Boyacá. He also helped the club to the quarterfinals of the 2016 Copa Colombia, scoring one goal in five tournament appearances.
Arsenal de Sarandi (2012-2015):
Rosero moved to Argentina to join Arsenal’s youth academy and began his professional career with the club in 2012. He enjoyed a pair of early breakthroughs by helping Arsenal win the 2013 Copa Argentina—starting in the semifinal against rivals All Boys—and by appearing in the 2014 Copa Libertadores, debuting in South America’s premier club tournament with a start in a 3-0 win over Mexican outfit Santos Laguna. In 2015, Rosero concluded his stint with Arsenal by playing 15 matches in the Argentine Primera Division and participating in the Copa Sudamericana, the second-most prestigious club tournament on the continent.
