Live from South Africa: USA-ENG

American flags wave

Checking in live from South Africa, some 9,000 miles from Kansas City! Though I do not recommend the cheap route for KC soccer fans to SA (i.e. St. Louis to Chicago to Atlanta to Accra to Johannesburg), I can now safely say it’s been every bit worth the three days of travel. Thank you for that, Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard. What a game! Hope everyone at KC Live! had a great time.

The US fans in Rustenburg came from all across America to rival the English traveling contingent, including the gentleman a row in front of me waving his Barra Brava D.C. United flag. Of course I took the opportunity to share my KC loyalties with him and relive our opening day result. All in good fun and a testament to the soccer fan base MLS has helped foster.

The atmosphere in the stands was tremendous throughout, but as I looked around the stadium before the match, I couldn’t help but I think of the new stadium all of us Wizards fans have on the horizon. Dare I say it, but it will be nicer than last night’s World Cup venue, which featured a track around the field and two inoperable scoreboards that left the 36,000+ in attendance without video, score, or even a clock. Never would I have thought CAB would spoil me being so close to the field!

Sunday was a day of rest and recovery, and thinking up chants to use from last night’s result when the Wizards face Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney’s Manchester United next month at Arrowhead!

More to come in the next few days as we get acclimated to South Africa and all it has to offer. Until then, here are a few pics from last night’s clash with England from our vantage point.

Go USA!
