Gambian, Trinidadians to train with Sporting

Sporting Kansas City coach Peter Vermes

Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes has confirmed that Gambian defender Omar Colley and two players identified at Sporting’s recent combine in Trinidad & Tobago would be joining the club to train during preseason, pending visa statuses.

The manager didn’t confirm the identities of the Caribbean players, but Trinidadian newspaper Newsday reported that Sheldon Bateau of San Juan Jabloteh and Daneil Cyrus of FC Santa Rosa are the players who will begin training with Kansas City on Jan. 24.

Both players line up in the defense. Bateau has represented the Trinidad U-20 national team, while Cyrus has represented the island nation at the youth and senior levels.

Colley, also a defender, has represented the Gambian U-20 team. He trained with Kansas City for a short period last August.

Vermes also said there was a chance that the club would bring one of its academy players to preseason, depending on the schedule and other commitments.
