Sporting Kansas City Goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen

Q&A with goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen

This is year two in Major League Soccer for you. What goals do you have for yourself and for the team?

For myself, I want to continue to improve and have a good season. For the team, to win the championship.

You were Kansas City's only MLS All-Star in 2010. Did you feel like some of your teammates deserved to play in the game?

We have a lot of good players who could easily make the All-Star team. Kei Kamara had a fanastic season last year for one.

You've gotten to play three other Eastern Conference teams – Colorado, Columbus and Houston – so far in pre-season. How’s the defense looking early on?

Compared to the very first game, we have improved a lot defending. Especially in the game against Colorado, we did very well defending in the shutout. Now we just have to put it all together. We are working at it every day.

With Jon Kempin being a young goalkeeper with a lot of potential, how have you been able to help him in his first professional pre-season?

He's my roommate. We’ve been through everything on this trip. I wake him up in the middle of the night with cold water, make him do my laundry, make him grab me a lot of water. I'm just kidding. He's a great, great guy who has all the opportunities in front of him to to be a very, very good goalkeeper for America.

There have been a lot of comments in the Danish press saying you’d like to coach once your playing career comes to an end. Where and at what level would you like to coach?

That’s a good question. It probably just depends on when I retire from my career. If it's next year, it's probably a lot easier to get a job in Denmark where they know me. If I stay here for another three of four years, maybe there's opportunities here. You never know. I will not close any doors.

You guys are going through two-a-days in Phoenix. Tell fans some of the things you guys are doing when you’re not on the training field?

Movies. I have seen True Grit, Company Men, and one more last night I don’t even remember. The Eagle.

Adda Djeziri is in camp with Sporting Kansas City currently. You played with him at Leicester City and in Denmark, correct? What does he offer as a player and what is the relationship like between the two of you now that you’re both in the U.S.?

To be honest, I'm trying to stay away from him as much as possible. Not because I don’t like him, but because he needs to get to know the other players by himself. That’s a lot better for him. He’s a good player and we get along well.

Thanks, Jimmy.
