Nielsen signs extension

Jimmy Nielsen in Eastern Conference Semifinal

Sporting Kansas City announced Monday that goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen has signed a contract extension with the club.

The extension will keep Nielsen at Sporting Kansas City through the 2013 season with an option for 2014, as well.

“There was never a question that I wanted to stay, after Peter told me that he would like me here as well,” Nielsen said. “I’ve only had Sporting on my mind, and I’m excited to play in front of our fans for the next couple of years that lie ahead as we work towards winning a championship.”

Since joining Sporting Kansas City prior to the start of the 2010 season, Nielsen has cemented himself as a fan favorite and one of the top goalkeepers in the League. In his first season with the club, Nielsen helped to record a total of 10 clean sheets as his performances earned him a nomination as an MLS All-Star.

Nielsen followed up a strong campaign in 2010 with arguably an even better season in 2011, starting 31 matches and improving his goals-against average to 1.14. Nielsen also won MLS Save of the Week on five different occasions in 2011 on his way to being voted as team MVP by coaches, teammates and media.
