The Houston Dynamo defeated Sporting Kansas City by a 3-0 scoreline today in MLS Reserve League action at the Sporting Club Training Center in Swope Park. Three second-half goals paced the Dynamo in a match that saw a 30-minute weather delay during the first half.

Goals from Cam Weaver, Alex Dixon and Colin Rolfe secured the victory for Houston, who move to 2-0-0 in the 2012 Reserve League schedule while Sporting Kansas City suffer their first loss in the competition after drawing 1-1 away to Real Salt Lake last week.

Sporting Kansas City generated the first chance of the match in just the fourth minute of play when Luke Sassano found the head of 2012 MLS SuperDraft first-round pick Dom Dwyer with a free kick from outside the area. The forward met the ball with power, but could not keep his effort under the bar. Ten minutes later Dwyer was involved again, flicking a Jon Kempin goal kick on for Jacob Peterson, who outpaced the Houston backline but had his low shot saved well by Houston goalkeeper Tyler Deric.

With 18 minutes played in the first half, lightning in the area forced the match to be delayed for 30 minutes.

After the break, the Dynamo nearly went in front on 37 minutes after good individual work from forward Mac Kandji released fellow forward Cam Weaver in alone on goal. Weaver opted to shoot low to the far post, but Kempin was able to push the effort around the post. From the ensuing corner, a clearance saw the ball fall to Dynamo Nathan Sturgis, whose half-volley was also corralled by Kempin.

Peterson would have another chance for Sporting Kansas City before the end of the half after a nice passing sequence saw defender Shawn Singh clip a ball over the top for winger Korede Aiyegbusi down the left. Aiyegbusi cut a pass back for Sassano, who squared for Peterson, but the forward’s shot was held as Deric dove down to his right to save.

Houston would open the scoring in the 58th minute when Dixon raced onto a long ball in behind the Sporting Kansas City defense before squaring for Weaver to pass into an empty net. Josue Soto could have extended the lead six minutes later, but his left-footed drive was just wide of the far post.

Dixon would grab a goal of his own in the 75th minute, hooking up with fellow Dynamo Academy product Soto to extend Houston’s advantage. Soto got to the byline and then hit a hard, low cross through the six-yard box that was turned in by Dixon to put the Dynamo up 2-0.

Substitute forward Colin Rolfe would cap the scoring four minutes later, as the rookie forward powered home a Dixon cross from the right two minutes after entering the match for Cam Weaver.

Both teams will continue 2012 MLS Reserve League play on April 10 as Sporting Kansas City host the Chicago Fire at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, while Houston travel to take on FC Dallas at FC Dallas Stadium.
