Julio Cesar: Rejuvenated

Julio Cesar's thunderous volley has generated quite a buzz since Saturday. But while the Brazilian scored his goal from a Graham Zusi corner, it wasn’t the only time he was offensive-minded against Toronto FC.

Cesar finished the match with four shots, which led the team. In fact, it was two more shots than he’s ever taken in a Sporting KC uniform. Take a look at the distribution map of what Cesar did on Saturday, highlighting passes, shots and ball possession:

As you can see, Cesar played his usual defensive role monitoring the space between central defense and central midfield. However, he also moved forward quite a bit with eight actions inside the attacking third. In comparison, he usually only comes into the attacking third two or three times per game.

Whether it was because of the team’s bye week or just the way Toronto played him, Cesar was the most active he’s been all season. He even suffered four fouls which is also a MLS-career high.
