After sitting out the group stage of the Disney Pro Soccer Classic with a right quad strain, Sporting Kansas City right back Chance Myers is expected to be at full speed when the team opens the regular season on March 2.
“It was just a tweak,” manager Peter Vermes told MLSsoccer.com by phone on Monday from Orlando, Fla. “He's fine now. We start training again tomorrow. We were off today, and he's going to be in full training tomorrow. We'll take it from there.”
Vermes had said last week that Myers might play on Saturday against the NASL's Tampa Bay Rowdies, but he did not take the pitch in Sporting's 1-0 win.
“That was my decision to not play him,” Vermes said. “He could have. We trained him in the morning individually. We just want to make sure he has a good week of training under him before he has significant minutes.”
Myers, who struggled with asthma early in his career, has become one of Sporting's fitter players in recent seasons – something that has helped him recover quickly from this knock, Vermes said.
“He doesn't tend to keep injuries for long, that's for sure,” Vermes said. “That fitness helps him come back much quicker.”
Orlando City SC right back Mechack Jérôme has started at right back in each of Sporting's three group matches. Vermes has been pleased with Jerome's play during his trial but said no decision had yet been reached on acquiring him from Sporting's new USL Pro affiliate.
“We've still got some talking to do with Orlando,” he said, “and then we'll decide on a couple of things going forward. We're just still not sure yet.”
