Playoff Math: Positioning at stake after Sporting KC clinches berth

After Friday night's 2-0 win vs. Chicago Fire, Sporting KC have clinched a spot in the 2014 MLS Cup Playoffs. The club currently stands tied for second place in the Eastern Conference with 49 points through 32 matches. It will be a busy final few weeks of the season with a trip to Philadelphia on Saturday, a midweek CONCACAF Champions League match on Oct. 23 and the regular season finale against New York on Oct. 26.


Below is the latest look at the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference and scenarios for Sporting KC (as of Monday, Oct. 13). Keep in mind that the fourth and fifth place teams in each conference have to play in the Knockout Round.


Sporting KC will clinch at least third place or higher in the Eastern Conference if:


  • They defeat Philadelphia AND
    Columbus defeats or ties New York


Sporting KC will clinch at least fourth place or higher in the Eastern Conference if:


  • They lose or tie vs. Philadelphia AND
    New York defeats Columbus


OR


  • They draw vs Philadelphia AND
  • Columbus defeats New York
