Quotes: Sporting KC 1-2 Colorado Rapids - August 29, 2014

Sporting Kansas City Forward, Dom Dwyer (#14)
On the goal...

It was a good all-around goal. Benny [Feilhaber] found Krisztian who beat his man before playing me a great ball. I'm obviously disappointed we lost tonight. That's what is most important.

On the fan support...

It's amazing. These fans are incredible whether we are home or away. Can't thank them enough for their support and unfortunately we couldn't reward them with three points.

Sporting Kansas City Defender, Matt Besler (#5)
On the fan support...

Nothing surprises me when it comes to our fans. For almost 1,000 fans to come to Colorado to watch us play is incredible and we don't take that for granted. We want to thank every single fan that made this trip and can't wait to play in front of them again at Sporting Park.

Colorado Rapids Head Coach, Pablo Mastroeni
On three-game winning streak…

We learned from our losses, and from our mistakes along the way. Tonight the guys played the type of football that is needed in the final stretch of the season. The guys did a fantastic job of finding ways to win these games. For that I am very proud and excited. This is the best birthday gift I’ve received from the players in a long time.

On sticking to the game plan…

Every time we do it, and get the result it validates the words we speak as a technical staff. Anytime you play Kansas City it is going to be a tough match, and it’ll come down to set pieces. The guys dug deep, believed in themselves, and got a very important win in front of the home fans that deserved two performances in a row.

On having a weekend off…

There’s so much to think about in prepare for. Sessions are going to be a little bit more intense. It’ll allow guys like [Jared] Watts and [Luis] Solignac to come to full health, which is really important as well.

On missed opportunities earlier in the game…

Against Kansas City, you’re going to want to bury all of the chances that you get. Things happen as they should. I am just really pleased about the way that they reacted, stuck together, fought, believed in themselves, and found a way to get a result.

On Sporting KC goal…

We didn’t start the second half sharp at all. It may have been that goal that sparked the guys and had them focused on staying the course, and finding success. The guys did a fantastic job. The guys that came in really made a difference, which is important as well. Everyone is contributing.

On Dominique Badji…

All of the guys that have come back from their stints in Charlotte have expressed how grateful they are to be here. Badji did a fantastic job holding balls up, fighting for balls, and flipping things on. He got into the game early. He has come back a different player, and we couldn’t be more excited about that.

On Vicente Sánchez…

He is an important piece to what we’re doing here tonight. He just needs one moment, and tonight he created quite a few moments that are goal dangerous. There was a very professional working night for Vicente on both sides of the ball, but more importantly he was doing his thing and enjoying himself. He has shouldered a lot of responsibilities in the last three months. I’m extremely pleased in the way he is conducting himself.

On Maynor Figueroa…

With every game he is getting more and more fit and comfortable. Tonight, he had four or five runs that had a nice little end product. Tonight the back four did a fantastic job. Clint [Irwin] did a fantastic job of keeping us in the game.

Colorado Rapids Forward, Kevin Doyle (#9)
On game…

Kansas City is a difficult team to play against. They are fit and strong. They are happy to sit back and not really let us play. In the end we deserved to win.

On second half…

Their first goal hurt, but we seemed to rally after that. It was a spark. We got better, created more chances, and became more dangerous.

On Pablo’s birthday…

We didn’t know it was his birthday until afterwards. We got some love and extra kick in us. He was delighted and said it was the best birthday present he’s received. Tonight, we were stuck between wanting to be on top, closing down, and being high tempo. In the end I think we finished looking pretty strong and fit. It wasn’t an easy week. We had three tough games and three good wins.

On what he takes away from the match…

Patience is a big word for us. We kept believing in ourselves and doing the right things and we won the game. We’re still keeping ourselves in the chances of playoffs. We’re still a few points away, but it’s still not the end of the season.

On game winning goal…

It’s nice that both of my goals have been important. I would like to get more goals, but the ones I have gotten have been important. It’s a great feeling to get the winner. If we don’t score all things point in my direction, so it’s been nice.

Did you have a feeling of deja vu?

Tonight was more difficult, just because we played Wednesday. We wouldn’t have had the same spark. We were trying to get ourselves fit and recovered for tonight’s game.

Colorado Rapids Midfielder, Marcelo Sarvas (#11)
On the game…

It’s how we played. I think we did a good job.

On the second half…

We spoke in the locker room about getting a little higher and not letting the defenders get too close to the ball. With two minutes they scored the goal, and today was the first day in the season we came from behind and turned it over. I think it was fantastic how the team reacted against a great team. It’s very important for what we are going to face in the last few games.
