Former Kansas City Wizards assistant coach Octavio Zambrano was named head coach of the Canadian Men’s National Team on Friday. The Ecuadoran born manager replaces Benito Floro who led Canada from 2013-2016.
Zambrano joined Kansas City in December 2009 and spent two year with the club, helping Manager Peter Vermes lead the team to the 2011 Eastern Conference Championship. He then left Kansas City to assume the head coaching role of Colombian club Deportivo Pereira - the former club of Sporting KC midfielder Jimmy Medranda.
In his current role with Canada, Zambrano will oversee the Men’s National Team as well as the youth national team setup down to the U-14 age level and up. Zambrano has more than 25 years of coaching experience in North America, Europe and South America and currently holds a UEFA A Diploma coaching award as well a USSF Coaching A License. In addition to his MLS experience with the Wizards, Zambrano also served as assistant and head coach of the LA Galaxy as well as head coach of the New York / New Jersey Metrostars.
