Sporting KC Academy coaches to kick off 14-month educational program in France

Kelly Findley - Sporting KC Academy

Sporting Kansas City Academy coaches Kelly Findley and Declan Jogi have begun a 14-month coaching development course alongside the French Football Federation (FFF), which will culminate with both coaches receiving their Elite Formation Coaching License (EFCL).

Major League Soccer today announced the third iteration of its partnership with the FFF that provides MLS youth academy coaches with world-class training through an in-depth course that results in graduates receiving the esteemed EFCL. Findley is an academy staff coach who works with all of Sporting KC’s youth sides, while Jogi is head coach of the Sporting KC U-13s.

The partnership was created in 2013 and has already produced more than 40 coaching graduates through the program. The initiative places participants through an MLS customized program incorporating features unique to their regions allowing coaches to better serve their respective club needs, while providing the same course and training demands the FFF mandates of its domestic coaches.

Program methods include on-field training sessions, classroom instruction and development of strategic academy growth through a series of seminars.

The EFCL is comprised of three phases, beginning on April 29 in Clairefontaine, France, and ending in June 2018.

  • FFF course with two weeks of intensive field and classroom instruction at the Clairefontaine national training facility in France and an additional five weeks of domestic training in the United States and Canada
  • European Club Observations – One week of immersion at an international youth academy at one of the following clubs: Olympique Lyonnais, Toulouse, Guingamp, Atletico Madrid, Malaga, RCD Espanyol, RB Leipzig
  • Integration of the Program with MLS Academy – Creation and/or modification of the Club’s youth curriculum and evaluation system for the development of players

In addition, Sporting KC U-18 head coach Jon Parry is one of 18 MLS academy directors and EFCL-certified coaches who will participate in a 10-day educational program courtesy of Spain’s La Liga. The participants will learn from top academy coaches and sporting directors on topics including strategic youth development, scouting and athletic development.

Earlier this year, Sporting KC assistant coach Kerry Zavagnin began his 12-month journey toward obtaining the highest and most prestigious coaching license in North America. Zavagnin was one of 17 professional coaches announced in January as candidates for the second edition of the U.S. Soccer Pro Course. Peter Vermes, Sporting KC’s Manager and Technical Director, was one of 13 members in the inaugural graduating class last December.
