Sporting KC to honor Neal Patterson tonight at Children’s Mercy Park

Sporting Kansas City will formally honor Neal Patterson tonight at Children’s Mercy Park when the club hosts FC Dallas in the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals.

Patterson, a principal owner of Sporting KC and the long-time Chairman and CEO of Cerner Corporation, passed away Sunday at age 67 due to complications that arose after a recent recurrence of a previously disclosed cancer.

To commemorate Patterson’s legacy as an iconic business and sports entrepreneur, a moment of silence will be observed before kickoff and the Honoree Seat in the Victory Suite will be left open in his honor. Sporting Kansas City players will wear orange patches on their jerseys tonight with the “Neal” wordmark, and the same wordmark will also be etched into the field for all fans to see. Under the authority of Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, the State of Kansas and U.S. flags will fly at half mast inside the stadium.

Patterson’s funeral will be open to the public, taking place Thursday at 11 a.m. CT at Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas (13720 Roe Ave.). The service will also be streamed live at cor.org/memorialsonline. For those interested in sending a card, they may be sent to the following address:
