Sporting Local Legends to honor standouts in the soccer community

Sam Pierron and Weymuth Family - Sporting Local Legends

In conjunction with the 100th consecutive MLS sellout at Children’s Mercy Park, Sporting KC will launch Sporting Local Legends on Saturday.

The Local Legends initiative honors individuals who have dedicated significant time and energy making a positive contribution toward the growth of soccer in Kansas City. This includes coaches, fans, business leaders and other standouts who have supported soccer in the community.

Local Legends honorees will have their names placed on the Sporting Local Legends wall just outside the Boulevard Members Club Patio. They will also receive SportingStyle merchandise and tickets to the match in which they are inducted. Fans are encouraged to nominate a Local Legend by visiting SportingKC.com/locallegends.

The first two Local Legends — Sam Pierron and the Weymuth Family — will be recognized Saturday at Children's Mercy Park during halftime of Sporting Kansas City's match versus FC Dallas.

Pierron has been a loyal fan of the club since 1995 when he was part of the Mystics, a small supporters group that evolved into the Cauldron. Pierron played an integral role as a Cauldron member and helped establish the Supporters’ Shield, the MLS trophy awarded annually to the team with the best regular season record. Thanks in part to Pierron’s leadership, the Cauldron now has a dedicated Members Stand on the north end of Children’s Mercy Park where passionate supporters chant and cheer for the full 90 minutes of every match.

The Weymuth Family has shown unwavering support of the club as Season Ticket Members since 1999. Deanna Weymuth, the mother of the family who passed away last month, regularly attended Sporting KC training sessions, baked cookies for players and coaches, traveled to road games, and attended all fan events tied to the team. Weymuth was formally honored in February during the Sporting KC Fan Forum at No Other Pub in the Kansas City Power & Light District. She is survived by her three daughters, Dee Dee, Sharon and Kitt.
