The Victory Project will host its annual Childhood Cancer Awareness Match on Sunday when Sporting Kansas City welcomes LA Galaxy to Children’s Mercy Park for a 1 p.m. CT kickoff (buy tickets).
As the philanthropic arm of Sporting KC, The Victory Project has invited more than 40 families afflicted by childhood cancer to Sunday’s match — all of which have had children previously recognized as Victory Project honorees.
Sunday also celebrates The Victory Project’s 100th honoree dating back to 2013. Five-year-old Eowyn Maynes and her family (pictured above) will watch the match from the Victory Suite in the northwest corner of Children’s Mercy Park and take place in a special halftime presentation involving the families of all past honorees.
In a continued effort to raise awareness and funds for cancer research and treatment, The Victory Project has partnered with MLS WORKS to deliver a unique matchday experience as Sporting KC and MLS aim to #KickChildhoodCancer.
As part of the initiative, Sunday’s match will “go gold” with an official gold game ball, corner flags and goal nets. Captains of both clubs will wear gold armbands, while all players will wear gold ribbon jersey patches as well as “Kick Childhood Cancer” shirts during the pregame walkout. In addition, the numbers on all Sporting KC jerseys will reflect the names of The Victory Project’s 100 honorees.
Sporting KC supporters are encouraged to support Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by donating colorful Band-Aids at all stadium entrance gates and writing inspirational messages on foam core at the Sporting Plaza. Sporting KC will also be handing out 2,000 gold golf ribbon pins on Sunday afternoon.
Lastly, fans can post images on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter with the hashtags #KickChildhoodCancer and #ScarvesUp for Scarftember. For each post submitted, MLS WORKS will make a donation in the fight against childhood cancer.
