The Swope Park Rangers (7-3-4, 5th place) and Fresno FC (3-5-7, 11th place) will meet for the first time when the teams take the field at 8 p.m. CT on Sunday at Chukchansi Park in California.
One of four USL expansion sides, Fresno FC are led by General Manager Frank Yallop who twice won MLS Cup and MLS Coach of the Year honors. On the field, Foxes forward Jemal Johnson has contributed a team-best six goals this season and will be joined in the attack by reigning MASL MVP Franck Tayou, signed on Friday from FC Wichita (NPSL).
Fresno FC went winless in league play through April and May, but bounced back emphatically with a 4-0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC 2 to open a busy month of June. Sunday’s match will be the team’s fifth game in 16 days and comes on the heels of a 1-0 home loss to Sacramento Republic FC on Wednesday.
The Rangers, set to play the team’s 10th road match thru the first 14 weeks of the USL season, will also be tested with a third game in nine days across three different time zones.
SPR enters with momentum from back-to-back victories, earning a 1-0 road result at Colorado Springs last Saturday on Hadji Barry’s fifth goal of the year. Four days later, three different players contributed goals – including a strike from Matheus Silva that was featured on SportsCenter Top 10 Plays -- in a 3-2 win over League leaders Real Monarchs.
