Sporting KC goalkeeper Tim Melia in contention for 2018 MLS Save of the Year

Tim Melia, the reigning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, set a career high with 106 saves during a standout 2018 season.

Arguably none were better than his full-extension dive to deny Yordy Reyna in the seventh minute of Sporting Kansas City's 6-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps FC on April 20 at Children's Mercy Park.

Melia's sprawling stop is one of 16 finalists for MLS Save of the Year, announced on Thursday. Fan voting is open at MLSsoccer.com and the MLS mobile app through Sunday, Nov. 11 at midnight PT.

Melia, who finished in the top five of last year's Save of the Year voting, has the fifth best goals against average (1.14) in MLS history among goalkeepers with a minimum of 1,000 minutes played. His 13 shutouts this season were second most in MLS and he led the League with three penalty saves en route to sharing Defensive Player of the Year honors for the club with Graham Zusi.

Melia's stunning save is now one of two plays from Sporting KC's victory over Vancouver that is nominated for an annual MLS award. Jimmy Medranda's swerving strike from long range in the 30th minute is also one of 16 candidates for MLS Goal of the Year. Click here to read more.
