Kansas City Star: Sporting’s new field is ready for the cold like never before

Thanks to some tireless work from dozens of Sporting Kansas City associates during a brief and frigid offseason, the Children's Mercy Park pitch is ready to handle winter conditions like never before.


Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star detailed the club's field renovations today, providing the scope of a comprehensive project that features a first-of-its-kind heating system.


“It came down to the bookends of the season,” Sporting KC President and CEO Jake Reid told McDowell. “We want to be in Champions League every year, and we want to be hosting playoff matches every year. We play our most critical matches at the start of the year and the end of the year. The high standard that we have here, this was the right thing to do.”
