Sporting Sounds: Matt Besler and Lothar Matthaus join Sports Radio 810 WHB

Matt Besler - Sporting KC vs. LA Galaxy - May 29, 2019

Border Patrol hosts Nate Bukaty, Steven St. John and Jake Gutierrez welcomed a pair of World Cup veteran center backs on Thursday morning.

First up was Sporting captain Matt Besler, who continues to work his way back from a hamstring strain. This particular conversation covered a variety of compelling off-the-field topics, including the following:

  • Father's Day is Sunday, meaning Besler has something to celebrate with his two young daughters
  • The St. Louis Blues run to the Stanley Cup title
  • The NBA Finals between the Golden State Warriors and Toronto Raptors
  • The discussion surrounding the U.S. Women's National Team's excessive celebrations in their 13-0 win over Thailand on Tuesday
  • Friday's annual Wiffle at the Hollow Home Run Derby, a Kansas City fundraiser that supports veterans with post-traumatic stress disorders

Following their segment with Besler, the Border Patrol welcomed legendary German World Cup champion Lothar Matthaus. Now retired, Matthaus is one of two players ever to compete in five separate editions of the FIFA World Cup. He won the trophy with West Germany in 1990 and has since rekindled his involvement with Bundesliga powerhouse Bayern Munich, for whom he played from 1984-1998 and 1992-2000.

In an engaging interview, Mattaus reflected on his storied career and looked ahead to the International Champions Cup match between Bayern and Italian side A.C. Milan, which will take place at Children's Mercy Park on July 23. This event was originally scheduled to take place at Arrowhead Stadium, but due to unprecedented wet weather impacting a construction project at the world-class venue, the matchup between two of the sport’s most historic and successful teams will now be held at Sporting Kansas City’s state-of-the-art, soccer-specific stadium. Tickets to the game will be available to the general public online at Ticketmaster.com beginning Saturday at 10 a.m. CT.
