The Kansas Jayhawks claimed the 2019 Big 12 Soccer Championship title after knocking off TCU by a 1-0 scoreline on Sunday at Swope Soccer Village. As tournament winners, Kansas will receive an automatic bid the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship.
The fifth-seeded Jayhawks defeated No. 4 West Virginia, top-seeded Oklahoma State and No. 6 TCU to claim the program's first Big 12 Soccer Championship.
Sunday's title game remained scoreless until the 55th minute when Kansas forward Mandi Duggan latched onto Ceri Holland’s pinpoint cross from the right wing and smashed a first-time shot past TCU goalkeeper Emily Alvarado. Jayhawks goalkeeper Sarah Peters—named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player—made four saves en route to the shutout, much to the delight of a pro-Kansas crowd at a sun-drenched Children’s Mercy Victory Field.
Played before a national television audience on FS1, Sunday's contest marked the seventh straight year the Big 12 soccer champion was crowned at Swope Soccer Village.
Led by head coach Mark Francis—now in his 21st season at the helm—Kansas will be one of 64 schools placed in the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship bracket on Monday. The Jayhawks are one of 31 teams set to receive an automatic berth as a conference champion, while 33 additional sides will be selected with at-large bids.
The NCAA tournament will begin Friday and conclude with the Women’s College Cup, consisting of the national semifinals and national championship on Dec. 6 and 8 at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California.
