Danny Clinkscale Podcast: Peter Vermes on his journey as a player and a coach in an evolving soccer world

Peter Vermes with arms crossed - Sporting KC vs. Houston Dynamo - Aug. 31, 2019

It was a conversation so rich, detailed and wide-ranging that it warranted two podcasts and over two hours of total airtime.

Back in January, Sporting Manager Peter Vermes Vermes joined Kansas City sports figure Danny Clinkscale for his first appearance on the Reasonably Irreverent Podcast

Serving as the first segment of a two-part podcast, Vermes spoke openly about his upbringing in the home of first-generation parents who fled oppression to build a life for their family. He was a soccer prodigy with a deep passion for the game, and that came across clearly through the manager’s storytelling, humor and honesty. Over the course of 45 minutes, he shared the backstory of his parents leaving communist Hungary, meeting his wife in high school, his mother passing away from cancer while Vermes was at Rutgers University, and the special relationships he shared with each of his immediate family members.

Part two of the must-listen feature dropped late last week on dannyclinkscale.com, casting the light on Vermes' remarkable journey as a professional player and coach. Over the course of almost two decades, Vermes represented the United States at the Olympics and the World Cup, became the first American to play professionally in Spain and the Netherlands, and pioneered the launch of MLS while punctuating his playing days as an MLS Cup champion in Kansas City.

As a manager and technical director, of course, Vermes has guided Sporting to four major championships and stamped his name as one of the most successful head coaches in MLS history.
