Tim Melia talks record-breaking shutout on Sports Radio 810 WHB

Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Tim Melia wasn't all that busy on Saturday, but his lone save of the night was both impressive and instrumental in preserving a clean sheet against the Houston Dynamo.

Melia's fingertip stop to deny Memo Rodriguez in a stunning 4-0 smackdown was among the many highlights that brought a sold-out crowd to its feet at sold-out Children's Mercy Park. It also allowed Sporting's veteran goalkeeper to collect his 46th career shutout in the MLS regular season, vaulting him into sole possession of first place on Kansas City's all-time charts.

In the wake of his momentous accomplishment, Melia joined The Program host Soren Petro to discuss Sporting's hot start on Sports Radio 810 this afternoon.

"It's special and it's something that has taken a lot of time," Melia said of breaking the club's shutout record. "I couldn't be more happy that this has happened at a club that has given me such an amazing opportunity."

Melia was even more keen to reflect on Sporting's fantastic performance in a home opener that players and fans alike won't soon forget.

"The way that we played in that game was so cool to watch. With our pressure all over the field, we didn't give them any time. Even if we weren't as clean on the ball, we got it back so quickly because we were smothering them all over the field. The way we played on Saturday and against Vancouver, those are some really good building blocks. If we continue on this track together, we're going to be a very difficult team to play against."

The cross-conference clash at Mercedes-Benz Stadium is slated for 6 p.m. CT with live coverage on FOX Sports Kansas City, FOX Sports Midwest Plus, FOX Sports GO, ESPN 94.5 FM and La Grande 1340 AM.
