They had already reached the summit as champions of Major League Soccer. All Sporting Kansas City needed to do now was put a ring on it.

Six years ago today, Sporting Club presented players, technical staff and associates with 2013 MLS Cup championship rings in a special pregame ceremony at Children's Mercy Park.

In a special twist to the occasion, Sporting fans were chosen in a raffle system to take part in the ceremony and deliver the championship rings to players and coaches on the pitch.

The ring ceremony took place before today’s regular season game to evoke memories of the championship game and triumphant shootout that led to their victory.  In true Sporting Kansas City fashion, the team wanted to include their fans in the ceremony.  Fans were chosen in a raffle system to take part in the ceremony and deliver the championship rings to players and coaches.

As for the match that ensued, Sporting showed no signs of a championship hangover in a 2-0 defeat of Columbus Crew SC. Jacob Peterson opened the scoring in the 10th minute before striker Claudio Bieler put the finishing touches on a comprehensive performance in second-half stoppage time to seal all three points. The Sunday afternoon contest aired nationally on NBCSN, giving the country a firsthand look at Manager Peter Vermes' men in their top form.
