Aiming to bounce back from a narrow 1-0 home loss to Birmingham Legion FC last Friday, Sporting Kansas City II (4-15-8, 20 points) will hit the road for a two-game trip this week against upstart Memphis 901 FC (9-8-8, 35 points) and Central Division leaders Louisville City FC (15-5-7, 52 points).
First up is a visit to AutoZone Park in Memphis on Wednesday night with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. CT and a live stream on ESPN Plus. The last time Sporting KC II traveled to Memphis, head coach Paulo Nagamura’s side secured a memorable 3-2 road win on June 26 as wingers Rojay Smith and Enoch Mushagalusa scored on both sides of halftime before defender Danny Barbir nodded home a dramatic winner in the 72nd minute.
Mushagalusa is the only Sporting KC II player who has appeared in all 27 USL Championship matches this season and has a team-best seven goals on the year. Smith has added five goals of his own while Sporting KC Academy product Jake Davis, who signed an MLS contract for Sporting in late August, leads the club with five assists.
Under the guidance of head coach Ben Pirmann, Memphis 901 FC are 3-0-1 in their last four games and can jump into the fourth and final playoff position in the Central Division with a win or a tie on Wednesday. In-form striker Kyle Murphy is tied for third in the USL Championship with 15 goals, but it was midfielder Laurent Kissiedu who thrived in Saturday’s impressive 3-0 away win at FC Tulsa with a pair of first-half goals.
SKC II and Memphis have gone 1-1-1 in three previous meetings this season, including a 2-1 Memphis road win on Aug. 1 and a scoreless tie four weeks later at Children’s Mercy Park.
