Preview: Sporting KC II to host Memphis 901 FC on Sunday

Ozzie Cisneros - Sporting KC II vs. Louisville City FC - July 28, 2021

Sporting Kansas City (3-8-5, 14 points) will have the opportunity to bounce back quickly from a midweek 2-1 home loss to Louisville City FC when they host Memphis 901 FC (4-4-4 16 points) in a 4 p.m. CT showdown on Sunday at Children’s Mercy Park. The Central Division clash will stream live on ESPN Plus as SKC II and Memphis lock horns in the second of four head-to-head meetings this season.

Under the guidance of fourth-year head coach and former Sporting Kansas City midfielder Paulo Nagamura, Sporting KC II staged a late rally but fell short to Central Division leaders Louisville on Wednesday at Children’s Mercy Park. After Jorge Gonzalez and Kyle Greig struck in the first 11 minutes of the second half, 17-year-old Sporting KC Academy product Ozzie Cisneros bagged his first professional goal with a thumping finish in the 89th minute to make the final score 2-1.

SKC II and Memphis most recently met on June 26 as Nagamura’s men prevailed in a 3-2 thriller at AutoZone Park. Rojay Smith and Enoch Mushagalusa found the back of the net to give the visitors a 2-0 cushion before Memphis responded through Kyle Murphy and Kadeem Dacres to restore parity at 2-2. In the 72nd minute, SKC II midfielder Jake Davis recycled a cleared set piece that defender Danny Barbir nodded home to give his team all three points. The clubs are slated to lock horns again on Sept. 29 at Children's Mercy Park and on Oct. 6 in Memphis.

Under the guidance of head coach Ben Pirmann and sporting director Tim Howard, a longtime U.S. Men’s National Team star, Memphis 901 FC are unbeaten in four straight since falling at home to SKC II. Murphy notably notched the lone goal of the game in their 1-0 triumph over FC Tulsa last Saturday. The team’s roster features former Sporting KC II defender Mark Segbers and a pair of former MLS veteran attackers in Roland Lamah and Dominic Oduro.
