SKC II Preview: Sporting KC II hosts Colorado Rapids 2 on Saturday night at Victory Field

Sporting Kansas City II hosts Colorado Rapids 2 on Saturday night at Victory Field in the third and final meeting between the two long-time Frontier Division rivals in the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro regular season. Sporting KC II has taken five points of Rapids 2 in the first two meetings, picking up a shootout win in March and a 3-1 victory in May. Both of those results came away from home for head coach Lee Tschantret's side.

The 3-1 saw Missael Rodriguez, Kashan Hines and Gael Quintero find the back of the net at DICK'S Sporting Goods Park

Hines, a 17-year-old SKC Academy forward has seven goals and one assist in 13 starts. He is one of two Sporting Academy players to play in 20 games alongside 16-year-old defender Jack Francka. Rodriguez has tallied six goals and an assist in his first season with SKC II.

SKC II also enters Saturday with two straight home wins. The group took down MNUFC 2 1-0 on July 19 and knocked off Dynamo Dos 3-2 on July 31. Rodriguez scored in both of those games with Hines bagging his first pro brace and an assist against Houston. The midfield duo of Blaine Mabie and Gael Quintero started both of those games. Mabis has split captain duties with defender Pierre Lurot throughout the 2026 campaign. 

Lurot leads the team in minutes played, having played all 1890 minutes available to him this season. The second year pro has been joined at center back by rookie Mitch Ferguson who has appeared in five straight games.

Colorado sits six points back of SKC II in the Frontier Division standings. They are led by head coach Erik Bushey who guided his group to the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro finals. They have two forwards with three goals each, Donavan Phillip and Josh Copeland. 

After the Saturday night showdown SKC II will head west for a three game road trip along the pacific coast. The journey starts in California where they will take on LAFC 2 on Thursday, Aug. 20. They will then face Tacoma Defiance and Whitecaps FC 2 on Monday, Aug. 24 and Sunday, Aug. 30. All three of the games can be streamed for free on the OneFootball app and at MLSNEXTPro.com.
