Anything but with Chance Myers: #LongHairDontCare and hypothetical bank robberies

Chance Myers

You already keep up with Sporting KC on the pitch, but what about off the pitch? SportingKC.com's Anything but series is your exclusive look into the lives of players and coaches outside of soccer.

Defender Chance Myers has been with Sporting Kansas City since he was selected by the team as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 SuperDraft. The 28-year-old California native ended 2015 as Sporting KC's longest tenured player.

So you're engaged now. Can you tell us how you and your fiancé met?

We met almost 5 years ago. It was Thursday night. We were at a bar. She played in a kickball league and after her kickball game, she went out to the bar with all her teammates and stuff, and I was there with one of my buddies who used to play with her. We got introduced that night and then we didn't see each other for a while, and when we saw each other again, we started talking. And it grew from there.

How did you propose?

I did it outside our house.

What's your favorite off-the-field memory with your teammates?

I think it would be preseason circa 2012. We all went paint balling. It was like the old guys vs. the young guys, and it was one of the most competitive afternoons I've ever been a part of. I just remember firing away at Davy [Arnaud] and Jack [Jewsbury], and it was just a lot of fun.

Are you a big fan of paint ball?

laughing No. That was my first time ever going.

First and only?

First and only, definitely.

What's your favorite memory of celebrating the MLS Cup?

It was my birthday and the MLS Cup on the same day, and I had about 25 to 30 family members in town, so right after the game we all went to Port Fonda. I had all my friends and family there — there was probably about 50 of us. So we all just celebrated my birthday and after that we went out and met up with the rest of the team. So it was kind of cool just having the whole day of hanging out with the team, my family, my friends and everything.

Any reason you decided to grow out your hair again?

Not really. I just like it long. It feels like it's more me.

How many headbands would you say you own?

Well, I steal all my fiancé's now. But if I don't have any I'll just use pre-wrap. I've gone through a good 150 in the past couple of years. I like to give them out after every game.

Do you have any go-to hair products?

Water. Shampoo and water.

So besides you of course, who has the best hair on the team?

Well best long hair I would probably say Zus. Best short hair? Hmm... Who keeps it clean? I like Benny. Benny has a wide variety of styles and I like that. I especially like the mullet.

Oh, don't we all. So defenders aren't necessarily known for having the best goal celebrations. Any plans to change that this season?

It's always so shocking when I do score. If a defender does score, we never know what to do. Unless you're like Ellis — he scored five goals so he probably knew what to do after awhile. But if I score I'm just going to whoever passed me the ball.

Okay, time to get serious. Pancakes or waffles?

Waffles.

Cats or dogs?

Dogs. I'm allergic to cats.

If you could read the minds of one of your teammates, who would you choose?

Bes — our capitán.

If you were going to rob a bank, who would you choose to be your accomplice?

Probably Dom. He's very reckless — like, safe and reckless at the same time. He's a very reckless driver, so he could be my getaway driver.

Let's say the team found out about your little heist. Who would be the one to rat you guys out?

EPB, because he's young and scared of the law.
