Major League Soccer announced today the MLS Team of the Matchday presented by Audi for Matchday 2 of the regular season with Sporting Kansas City forward Dejan Joveljic honored as one of the top 11 players in the league following the team's 2-2 draw with the Columbus Crew.
Wearing the captain's armband, Joveljic provided both goals in Saturday's entertaining home opener at Sporting Park to equal the club record as the fastest player to score 20 regular season goals in team history.
Fastest to 20 regular season goals for SKC
1. Dejan Joveljic, 34 games (2025-26)
1. Preki, 34 games (1996-97)
3. Dom Dwyer, 44 games (2012-14)
4. Digital Takawira, 45 games (1996-97)
5. Alan Pulido, 48 games (2020-23)
Joveljic pulled Sporting KC level in the 48th minute on Saturday with a composed finish from eight yards out -- scoring in his team's home opener for a third straight year -- then put Sporting KC ahead in the 72nd minute for the ninth multi-goal game of his MLS regular season career.
"Dejan is one of the best strikers in this league in and around the box," Sporting Kansas City head coach Raphael Wicky said in his postgame press conference. "He's also our captain. The way he behaves himself on the field and in the locker room as a leader is really good, and now I hope the team can keep going and he can also keep going."
"I just try to stay focused and try to make that one extra run because I know that the ball will come," Joveljic told media in the locker room postgame. "I was happy that the ball bounced twice to me and I scored two goals. One extra run and be a little bit hungrier than the defenders."
Sporting Kansas City will next host Western Conference leaders San Diego FC at 7:30 p.m. CT on Saturday at Sporting Park. Tickets are available online at SeatGeek and college students can also take advantage of the  Sporting U Pass  to secure $15 Supporters' Stand tickets all season long.
Saturday's showdown will be available to watch on Apple TV in both English (Neil Sika and Kyndra de St. Aubin) and Spanish (Jesus Acosta) in addition to local radio coverage on Sports Radio 810 WHB (Blake Aerni and Jon Kempin) and La Grande 1340 AM (Josue Orantes and Diego Gutierrez).
