“Life is only as good as you choose to make it, so choose to make it the best possible life for you,” said William Chrisman High School science teacher, Desirae Harrison.
On top of that inspirational message, Harrison also consistently reminds her students to be the best version of themselves each and every day. This positive and optimistic approach has guided her to a successful 12-year teaching career that continues to strengthen on an annual basis.
“I have taught nearly every high school science course our district offers,” said Harrison. “I’ve also taught Leadership where my students plan and implement real improvements around our school, from community-building projects to school-wide initiatives that make William Chrisman a better place for everyone.”
A highly decorated educator, Harrison was named ‘Teacher of the Year’ and also received the ‘Inspiring Educator Award’ from the district and foundation. These recognitions, along with her ability to teach at the same high school she once attended, make each day a blessing that she refuses to take for granted.
“At (William) Chrisman, I learned empathy from my peers and grit from my teachers,” said Harrison. “That same spirit still lives in our building today. The community that’s been established is incredible. The students, teachers, secretaries, cafeteria staff, custodians, and all others work together to build relationships and show the kids how much we truly care.”
Harrison’s lesson plans and day-to-day structure helps produce a learning environment that’s benefitted her students for more than a decade. On top of teaching them the necessities of physics and chemistry, she is also subtly reminding them that in order to be great at something, they have to put in the work and not let setbacks alter their plans.
“Each year brings a fresh chance to try new ideas, improve my teaching, and create experiences that help students feel excited about learning,” said Harrison. “I love the energy of a new start and the opportunity to help students discover what they are capable of. A successful year is one where students grow in both confidence and curiosity. I want them to leave my class feeling proud of what they’ve accomplished and more capable than when they started.”
By priding herself on her commitment to the classroom, Harrison is a prime example for her students to learn from. She mentions that when students realize they have the power to create positive change, that impact can stretch far beyond the classroom walls.
“The number one expectation I tell my students on day one is that when they walk into my room, they come ready to learn,” said Harrison. “If they are here for that, everything else follows. They understand that they must respect themselves, their peers, and me. They’re encouraged to work hard and hold themselves to high standards. I believe this helps them understand life outside the classroom as well. Learning how to set personal standards and expectations for themselves is a skill they will use long after they leave my class.”
“Desirae embodies what it means to serve others with compassion, dedication, and purpose,” said Harrison’s nominator, Jordan Plowman. “Every decision she makes is rooted in what is best for her students, both academically and personally. Her classroom is a space where students feel seen, valued, and supported. She takes the time to ensure each student knows they matter, creating an environment where they feel safe to express themselves, take risks, and grow. In a world where many students face challenges outside of school, Desirae provides consistency, encouragement, and genuine care.”
