Recap: Sporting KC earns 2-0 victory over Houston Dynamo

Sporting Kansas City (6-17-3, 21 pts.) earned a 2-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo (13-9-5, 44 pts.) at Shell Energy Stadium on Saturday night. Andre Luiz stole the headlines once again with a goal and an assist, tallying for the third straight match to open the scoring before setting up Calvin Harris on the stroke of halftime to seal the result.

Head coach Raphael Wicky was forced into one change from last Saturday’s loss to the Philadelphia Union, as second-year center back Jansen Miller replaced the injured Moises Mosquera along the backline.

Sporting took the lead in the 27^th minute and once again it was record-signing Andre making the difference in the final third. Stephen Afrifa picked up a loose ball inside the Houston penalty area and cut it back to the penalty spot where Andre was waiting to thunder home his fourth goal for the club in just his fourth start.

Houston almost pulled level four minutes later when Agustin Bouzat arrived on a precise cutback in front of goal but Stefan Cleveland stuck out his left foot to make a brilliant save, diverting the ball onto the post.

Sporting pulled further ahead on the stroke of halftime as Harris fired home from close range after more excellent work from Andre down the right wing. Lasse Berg Johnsen won the ball back inside the Dynamo half and fed Andre, who cut beyond his marker before rifling a low ball in front of goal that Harris prodded into the roof of the net to double the team’s lead heading into the interval. With four goals and six assists this season, Harris now has a single-season career high 10 goal contributions in 2026.

As the match headed into first-half stoppage time, Houston was reduced to 10 men when legendary Mexican midfielder Hector Herrera received a red card for violent conduct after putting his hands around the neck of Taylor Calheira during a skirmish instigated by the Dynamo’s Franco Negri. It was the first red card to a Sporting opponent in 37 matches, dating back to July 12, 2025.

Sporting started the second half well and almost added to the team’s lead through a pair of Afrifa chances, first curling a low effort narrowly wide of the post in the 50^th minute before heading over from Harris’ cross 11 minutes later.

The Dynamo began to grow into the game as the second half wore on and tested Cleveland through Guilherme’s free kick from distance in the 66^th minute and Antonio Carlos’ header four minutes later.

Sporting saw the game out professionally during the closing stages, maintaining possession and keeping the hosts at arm’s length – while substitute Owen Wolff almost added a third with the final kick of the game but his close-range effort was deflected over the bar as Sporting claimed the 2-0 victory and the team’s first shutout of the 2026 season.

Sporting remains on the road this coming week as the team visits the Seattle Sounders at Lumen Field on Thursday night. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. CT and will be available to stream on Apple TV, while the game will be air on the radio on Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM.
