Recap: Swope Park Rangers claim 1-1 road draw with Arizona United SC

The Swope Park Rangers played to a 1-1 draw with Arizona United SC on Saturday night at the Peoria Sports Complex in Peoria, Ariz. The two sides traded first-half penalties, converted by Long Tan and Kris Tyrpak, before Matheus Silva and Ayrton were both shown red cards in the second half as the game finished in a draw.

The Rangers (6-7-3, 21 pts.) began the game on the front foot, with Tyler Pasher and Amadou Dia causing problems down the left wing with their pace and interplay. In the eighth minute, Pasher beat his man on the wing and hit a low cross toward the back post that Tyrpak couldn’t force home, before Tyrpak saw a shot blocked from inside the area three minutes later.

In the 26th minute, the referee awarded Arizona United (4-6-6, 18 pts.) a penalty after Mark Anthony Gonzalez was adjudged to have fouled Uchenna Uzo in the area following a corner. Long Tan stepped up to convert his team-leading fifth goal of the season and put AZU 1-0 up.

SPR earned a penalty of their own just moments later, when Tyrpak attempted to flick a ball through traffic and Uzo was whistled for handling the ball. Tyrpak took the ensuing spot kick, sending the ball into the corner for his fourth goal in 2016.

Arizona grew into the game as the half wore on, and Luke Rooney forced Jon Kempin into a low save in the 42nd minute before Adam West’s free kick rattled the SPR crossbar just before halftime.

The Rangers were the first to threaten in the second half, with Tyrpak flicking on a corner at the near post that Gonzalez was inches away from turning home. In the 61st minute, Amer Didic lined up a free kick from 35 yards that had goalkeeper Carl Wosczcynski stranded, but it crashed off the post.

Moments later, Arizona were reduced to 10 men when Matheus Silva struck Dia in the face off the ball, sparking a team-wide confrontation between both sides. In the aftermath, SPR substitute Ayrton was also sent off.

Dane Kelly, who had come in as a second-half substitute, saw two efforts fly narrowly wide in the dying moments of the game, while Arizona substitute Julian Ringhof almost turned the ball into his own net as SPR went looking for a winning goal.

Referee Daniel Radford doled out seven cautions and two ejections total in the game as the Rangers saw out the 1-1 draw and extended their unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1).
