Sporting Kansas City played 73 minutes on Saturday with a man advantage after Collen Warner was issued a red card for handling the ball on the goalline. And while some teams struggle to take hold of the game a man up, Sporting KC did not disappoint, completing more than 700 passes en route to a 3-0 win over the Montreal Impact.
Midfielder Oriol Rosell and forward Dom Dwyer were each named to the MLSsoccer.com's Team of the Week for their performance on Saturday.
As illustrated in this week's Beyond the Box Score, Rosell completed a remarkable 96.39% of his passes, topping Kyle Beckerman for the MLS single game record since OPTA began tracking stats in 2011. Rosell had a hand in two of Sporting KC's three goals, successfully threading passes during the scoring sequences that led to Paulo Nagamura goal and Dwyer's second goal.
Among midfielders with at least 300 completed passes in 2014, Rosell has as 89.89% completion percentage, second only to the LA Galaxy's Juninho (89.96%). The Spanish midfielder has always played a critical role in Sporting KC's attack in 2014, with an 86.61 completion percentage in the opponent's half in 2014, second only to the Seattle Sounders' Osvaldo Alonso (86.93%).
VIDEO: Dwyer Postgame
Dwyer tallied two goals on Saturday to increase his goal-scoring total to six this season. The third-year midfielder recorded his second multi-goal game in as many months and now has four goals against the Montreal Impact in 2014.
Dwyer put Sporting KC on the scoresheet in the 18th minute, converting his penalty kick attempt past goalkeeper Troy Perkins. The young striker then completed his goal-scoring affair, capping off a beautiful passing sequence with a left-footed strike past Perkins in the 64th minute. Dwyer is now in a three-way tie for fourth on the MLS goal-scoring chart with Real Salt Lake's Alvaro Saborio and Houston Dynamo's Will Bruin.
The Team of the Week honor is Dwyer's second in 2014 and Rosell's first. Both players were also honored by Goal.com for their performance vs. Montreal.
